Q: What USB storage are supported via OTG by the X5?

A: Owing to some limitations of the controller board, the X5 currently only supports USB storage utilizing USB controllers from specific brands, specifically:  Skymedi, ITE, Innostor, SiliconGo, Phison, and CBM (Note: these are the brands for the USB controller not the brands of the USB storage device)
If you are not sure of what brand of controller your USB storage is using, you can download the PC utility (Identification tool for the main control chip of the U Flash Disk) for checking, and here is the link for download:

My OTG function does not work properly.  Whenever I attach the OTG cable to my X5, using a PNY flash drive, I constantly have issues even playing just one song to completion.  The X5 will either stop playing the track, skip to the next track mid-song or freeze up the X5 to the point where I have to perform a hard boot.  I have used your ChipGenius as recommended.  My controller is Innostor, one that you list as supported by the X5.  I would appreciate someone addressing this issue so I can fully utilize the OTG functionality on my X5.

If you load those same tracks to the Micro SD card,  the X5 can support them or not? And what kind of format are the tracks? This flash drive is FAT32 or NTFS?

Yes, I can load them onto a mSD card, and have done this, and they play as expected.  The files are in wave format.  The flash drive is FAT32.

Sadly, i have 4 flash drives(controllers not in the supported list) and each of them dont work with OTG Fiio x5. Would be nice if OTG x5 will work with any type of flash drives. After all, OTG can be used in a journey, for example listen music from comrade flash drive. In the way not possible to find the correct(Supported) flash drive if you need it and no have another ways to listen music.

Pls try to use the OTG cable to connect the X5 with the FiiO TF card reader. If inserting the Micro SD card into the card reader, the X5 can play songs in the card reader normally? Just want to confirm whether the OTG function of your X5 is normal or not. If normal, then it will prove the X5 can't be completely compatible with your Flash drive.

Per your request, I put a mSD card into the FiiO TF card reader and attached the reader to the OTG cable, then attached the cable to my X5.  So far, I was able to play tracks without any issues.  What this tells us is that the OTG works only with a mSD chip, not with a flash drive with a controller chip that the FW supports.  This is a defect that the X5 developers need to address and fix.  You have advertised that the X5 works with the a flash drive, with a controller that the FW supports, using the OYG cable.  Clearly, this is not the fact.  The fact is that this functionality does not work.  I love my X5, but I really believe this defects needs to be fixed.

I have found an old Sandisk USB stick (cruzer blade) which works using the OTG facility. Playback is fine but when I scan the library, the X5 scans everything on TF1 and TF2 but ignores the OTG stick. Will this be fixed with firmware? I bought the X5 hoping to add a large SSD to the OTG cable to get to about 500gb overall, but the usability of that is badly compromised if all the files on the SSD are not going to be read into the library.

Yes, when updating the media library, the songs in the flash drive will not be updated. And it is designed that way. Because in our opinion, the flash drive may be disconnected  from the X5 easily by end users, comparing with the Mciro SD cards. If those songs in the flash drive can be upated, then at that time, when going access to Category, end users will be informed that certain "file not found".

Thanks for the reply - I think you should change this as there are many users who want to use the OTG facility in the same way as the TF cards because 256gb just isn't enough capacity for them, and if the library doesn't scan the OTG you can't access all the same functionality. To be honest I don't understand the reason you have given for not scanning the OTG - it's very easy to delete files from the TF cards too. Perhaps you could add a menu option where you can choose whether to scan the OTG or not.  Fiio may lose quite a few sales if you don't allow users to scan the OTG, some of us got very excited about a player where we could have 500+ gb , but if the library won't scan the OTG then you can't shuffle all songs, and you are effectively stuck with browsing through folders if most of your files are not available in the category search. Please change the current setup, I really think it's a big mistake.

Yesterday I got one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral ... ords=integral+512gb
and can confirm it works with the X5 on OTG. I had seen one being sold cheaply on ebay and emailed Integral's customer service who confirmed it had a Phison USB controller. I thought it was probably worth the risk, and it was. I now have 2 x 64gb TF cards and a 512gb SSD. That's enough room for about 22,000 FLAC files.
So nice Fiio people, how about giving us the option to scan the OTG storage into the library?

I ordered mine some days ago, so I'm still waiting.
But I was wondering... is it possible or has somebody try to use an ipod classic (120gb with Rockbox firmware, in my case) like an usb storage via OTG?

I'm afraid I haven't monitored the battery life at all. It's probably a bit less than before but with no moving parts in the SSD it shouldn't be much less.

I was disappointed to see FW2.4 released without the ability to scan the OTG into the library. Come on Fiio,, if you just make it a separate menu option, then nobody loses and OTG users win big !!

I can't say for sure but I think the mydigitalssd drives use a phison chip. Try contacting their customer services to ask.

Thanks for the reply! I just checked their website and yes they do use a phison chip. I am going to give it a try since that is on the list of chips that will work.
