Q: How to create the  X7/X5 3rd gen/X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 external playlists(with relative pathing)?

(Note: the external playlists are only accessible through "Browse files", but not " Play by category" or "Category" section.  Because it may cause the conflict between external playlists and internal ones, if all of them are categorized into " Play by category" or " Category" - > " Playlists".  In consideration of the whole system stability of the DAPs, this design will not be changed in the future firmware update.  Thanks in advance for your understanding and support )

Method for adapting existing playlists for the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5
The  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 can read playlists with relative pathing and thus is compatible with most existing playlists that do not reference the drive letter at the beginning of each track reference, with one caveat.

Method for creating playlists for the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 in foobar2000
New playlists compatible with the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 may be created using foobar and a text editor as follows:
1. Connect the SD card for the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 to the computer (e.g. by connecting the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 itself with the SD card inside in Storage USB mode)
2. Load the songs desired from the SD card into a new playlist and save the playlist as a M3U8 file in the root directory of the SD card.

3. Open the M3U8 file in notepad.  Check that no drive letters are mentioned at the beginning of each line.

* If the playlist is to be played on X7/X5 3rd gen, you need to also replace all the backslash \ with slash / in the playlist, otherwise it cannot be recognized. You may use the Replace function on notepad (Edit->Replace) to do the replacement.

Method for creating playlists for the  X5 2nd gen/X3MKIII/X3 2nd gen/X1 2nd gen/X1/X3/X5 in iTunes
If using a windows PC for playlist creation, foobar2000 is recommended over iTunes.  If using iTunes on the Mac, the custom playlist export program created by fellow X1/X5 user, JeremyLaurenson, is recommended:

Please note that as of FW1.1, the X1 does not require editing of M3U/M3U8 files to add the #EXTM3U line.

I have a X1 with firmware FW1.10 and I have successfully created external m3u playlists.
However, I can only get the playlists to work when they are in the root of the Micro SD card.
I would like to keep all my playlists in a "Playlist" directory but can't navigate out of this directory into a directory containing my music files.
Examples of lines from an m3u file that I've tried:
/albumDirectory/musicFile.flac
../albumDirectory/musicFile.flac
I understand that the X1 OS is a variant of Linux/Android. I am a Linux user and but can't work out how to get this to work.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

OK so my new X1 claims to have firmware FW1.2 - I can play my existing playlists by going directly to their location in the file/folder structure, but they do not appear under the Playlists heading in the Category selection. Is this to be fixed in FW1.3?

Hi, similarly, you also can use iTunes to create the m3u playlist firstly, then load the playlist to X5 directly.
Pls be noted that, the X5 can't sync with the iTunes directly.

Hi, you meant all the external playlists can't work if they are placed in one folder named " Palylist "? For this case, pls edit the m3u file with the direct path. That is to say, pls add the driver letters("TF1:\" or “a:\”) at the beginning of each track reference, then save it and test again.
Hope that helps.

Hi, kindly be noted that, only the playlists created by the X1 directly can be recognized in the Category selection. And they have the special naming rules.
When going access to "Category" - "Playlist", the system can't recognize the external playlist because their name are different each other, and it may make system frozen if the inner playlists and external ones are mixed together. So in order to keep the system running smoothly, we will not fix it. Hope you can understand!

Hi, about to purchase an X1.  Need to confirm something... if I use Jriver Media Center to create playlists on my Windows 7 PC, can I copy them to the X1 without having to first manually edit a .m3u file?

Hi, sorry for that we also don't know whether the .m3u file created by the Jriver Media Center can be compatible with the X1 directly because we have not yet tried to do that. If possible, could you pls let me know the content of the original .m3u file from Jriver Media Center?

I don't understand your reply - as far as I'm aware, the X1 cannot create playlists directly. If so, how?

Ok, I will try to explain it.

The X1 can create the playlists directly. And the way to create internal playlists and add songs to internal playlists is: while playing a song, go to the Now Playing screen and press the Shortcuts key and choose the [+] icon and press OK. Follow the onscreen prompts to create a new playlist or add the current song to an existing playlist.
As I said previously, the internal playlists only can be accessed in the Play by Category menu.

BTW, what firmware version is your X1? FW1.0 or FW1.1?

You are right!
Here my recipe how to create Playlists for FIIO X1 with FW 1.10:
Write a text file named like you want as *.m3u file and anywhere you want on the SD Card containing the following lines pointing to the lokations of the songs in their order to be played:
..\path of folder\first song
..\path of folder\next song
....
..\path of folder\last song
(song means song file name with file extension, can be from differend folders/albums)
That's an external Playlist, so You can use it only via the folder view and not in the playlist menu!

Very helpful is the program PlaylistCreator.
You shoult choose relative path for playlist entries in settings.

Is it possible to customise the name of directly created playlists? Playlist1, Playlist2, etc. is not very descriptive... Also how does one delete such a playlist?

It's not possible, I think.
You can delete them going to the "Playlist#" and click the upper left bottom of the X-keyarray. A recyclebin will appeare, press OK bottom. To delete single entries do the same on the entries in the playlist.

Deleting playlists doesn't seem to work - I click the shortcuts button and get the trashcan symbol, press the centre button, and all that happens is a '-' symbol inside a circle appears to the far right of the playlist. If I leave the category and go back in again, the playlist is still there, this time without the '-' inside the circle.

1. After the '-' symbol inside a circle appearing to the far right of the playlist, pls scroll the wheel to move the cursor to one playlist file which you want to delete, and press the "Previous song" or "Next song" button, then you will find that the '-' symbol is highlighted.
2. At this time, pls press the 'OK' button , and it will provide an option for you to delete the playlist file or not. Pls see the picture attached.

3. Then pls scroll the wheel anticlockwise to select "Yes".
Hope that helps.
