This is for the X1 and 2nd generation X3 and X5

I have a feeling that the next X1 update won't please as many people as I'd like it to, that's why I am now beginning to bring the 'Rockbox' software into discussion with the users here, to see their differing opinions on the matter, and to save many, many headaches with the...rather dissapointing software.

If you're new and have no idea what rockbox is, then allow me to explain.

Rockbox is an alternative program used in many different Digital Audio Players, ranging from Sansas' to iPod Classics, it is open source and has a VAST variety of features and options, some that FiiO owners would be absolutely thrilled to have.

You are able to read more here: http://www.rockbox.org/

RAM won't be a problem as the software files would mainly be located at the root of the SD card, and will rid of many limitations the FiiO Technical team is currently having, what we need right now is a way to allow the alternative program to actually successfully boot on said player, and to understand the FiiO X1 hardware to realize it.

Documentation exists here, but it is extremely scarce: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/FiioX1#Boot_Procedure

Discussion Exists: Here

Extended Discussion is also: Here

The main point of this thread is to spark interest, no substancial progress has been made, there is very little, if any, progress being made with porting Rockbox on the FiiO X1/X3/X5.

The FiiO X1 would be the easiest to understand and port, for now.

Of course, like anything, it isn't easy, and we would need sensitive info and proper documentation from at least the FiiO X1 to even get started with this kind of thing, I am willing to donate my player to have somebody do maitenance, I don't expect a miracle, only scans and simple tests, if you're up for it, then contact me.

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/NewPort

Above is what you need to know for this kind of thing, we need dedicated people who are willing to pour time and energy into this kind of thing, it can't be done in a day, nor a week.

I would be interested in being part of the coding effort to port Rockbox to the Fiio (though I've never worked with Rockbox before).

There are some things that would explain it well to someone like yourself.

and www.rockbox.org/wiki/DevelopmentGuide
Lastly, this one, but it comes later
http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/RockboxKernel

The NewPort section in the OP says you need skills in electronics and embedded programming in C and assembler, so if you have those, you're good to go!

Skim through it and see if you could have an idea of what you are able to start with, I'll be here if you need me to collect data and other things.

I'll be looking for open board pictures of the FiiO and people willing to take my own player to check its guts, let's hope we can obtain more people for this concept project.

My electronics skills aren't so hot, but I have experience with embedded programming and assembler... hopefully I can be part of a team effort.

Do efforts to port Rockbox to some device usually end up with a Github repo to rally around or something?

Yes, they usually do.

That's where the magic comes from!

Now we just have to see if anyone experienced with electronics is willing to use their or my player as a sacrificial lamb to throughout inspect the parts in it.

I found a sheet, but it is in spanish...

This would be a lot easier if they actually had it in their hands though...

I have absolutely nothing to contribute technically, but you guys would be my heroes if there could be a working Rockbox port onto the X1. My Sansa finally bit the shit and I bought an X1, which I generally love, but there are so many Rockbox features I miss.

Dear all, to be honest, limited by the software design ability, it is not easy to put Rockbox port onto the x1. Anyway, we will try our best to realize it.

@Yellow - one of the beauties of Rockbox is there is a community of developers out there to do the work of porting, they just need to be interested and given good info to get started.

Rockbox already runs well on MIPS devices like the Ingenic in the X1/3/5 series, so porting would have a solid start.

What FIIO could do is release more tech specs, as well as either an unlocked bootloader or tools to sign custom code.  Donating a few devices to rockbox would be helpful too.

I think the hardware in the X series is more than capable of running the software (It runs on 5 year old Sansa for example) but since FIIO is still a new name, the company actively supporting the project would be very helpful.

Thanks

I have no experience with RockBox, but it sounds easier to manipulate playlists than what we currently have, so I would love that.

Yes, rockbox would take care of most of the problems I have with my X3II.    It's definitely easier to deal with a large library of music than it is on the X3II firmware.  (no spinning the wheel for 5 minutes to scroll through the list, etc)

The only bad thing I can say about Rockbox is it's support of reading embedded .pngs is missing and lacking support with progressive and floating point embedded .jpgs, otherwise it's a rock solid piece of alternative firmware.  I've used it on my iPod Video before it to went to iPod heaven.

I just want to suggest that supporting this would increase the sales of FiiO products. Many people love modding devices to suit their needs and this would allow a pre-established community of users to consider FiiO when making a new device purchase.

I would love to see Rockbox, even though a vast amount of themes are really ugly.

Please go ahead with Rockbox and support the developers as much as possible.
Rockbox would be great, the MAX!
(I have a Sansa clip+ and it sounds great)

I like very much the interface and the features of rockbox, and i miss something in the current fiio X5II intercace. It will be a very interesting thing to have rockbox on the X5II , if all the advanced features including balance/volume/gain control will be implemented

It would be great if FiiO adds special menu item into his X1-X3-X5 firmwares.
Under this item, load a special file (user.bin for ex) from the SD card and run it.
So we can easily write and run own software for the player including a rockbox.
