It would be great if FiiO adds special menu item into his X1-X3-X5 firmwares.
Under this item, load  ...

Agreed, I guess a firmware that could be run loaded directly from set directory of the MicroSD card would help designing new features/themes/fw implementations.

Something like this?:
-- directory:  /customFw
(if directory present, bootloader tries to load fw from there
to RAM and fw has to does not display fw while browsing
    from DAP)
-- files: **unpacked** version of firmware ...

Seems X5ii has five "drives":
a:\ - SD1
b:\ - SD2
c:\ - OTG
y:\ - internal memory for playlists, settings, etc.
z:\ - firmware.
So we can try to "remap" drive z:\ to a:\ in sys.bin
and place unpacked firmware into SD card.
This can help us to quick manage themes, settings etc,
but sys.bin always started from NAND by SDL (stage II boot loader)

Hi.. Actually that is the way the software has been designed to work. Due to internal policies  and limitations to the software making drastic changes are not possible, however thank you for sharing your inputs. Your suggestion will be noted.

I've read in the rockbox's forum that there are some developers working on a port for Fiio X1. But it would be great some collaboration from Fiio with them.

There is already a wiki section for the X1.

Just to let fiio and there team know i have bought the x3ii for 2 of my family members and 1 x5ii for my self and we all return the product due to the worth user interface in the world.   And the lack of different things you can do with the player.  So i went on eBay and bought all of is iPod video and put Rockbox on it.   in my opinion sound wise playing flac files and and mp3 it sounds better the the x5ii i would imaging that with rock box on the x5ii would sound a lot better because it give you the ability to change all types of setting for cross-feed and eq base cut off treble cut off and on and on and on.  Please forgive my grammar worth subject in school.

Problems I have with your post:

1. Take a pair of sensitive headphones and turn the volume up when you boot an iPod video with Rockbox.  You should hear a constant clicking in the right earbud / headphone speaker.

2. The iPod Video does not have better sound quality under techinical details.

3. Sound quality can be subjective.

If you setup up correctly with the fiio e12 blanc there are the settings i used and these are some new eqs files for iPod video that made it sound better.  the eqs files are called  Disco Pro Joe's Rockbox EQ Presets, Version 3.1.

Plus i modded my iPod Video

Here is the link to what i did the the iPod

https://www.iflash.xyz/modding-audiophile-meets-ipod-diymod/

The concept is simple, bypass all the poor quality SMD components and feed the DAC (Digital to Analog Convertor) output directly in to an external high quality headphone amp

.Here are the settings i used.

**Software Crossfeed**

Rockbox: opensource firmware for a variety of devices. The Simple (Meier) setting does virtually nothing according to my ears, but some people swear it sounds great. To reproduce a realistic crossfeed with the Custom settings unfortunately darkens (or muffles) the sound considerably. This is because headphones are voiced to sound tonally balanced *without* using crossfeed. With crossfeed, the head shadow and to a lesser extent the comb effect both act to attenuate the upper mid-range and treble. Fortunately, Rockbox has a fantastic equalizer so this can be corrected. Here are my favorite Rockbox Settings: Direct Gain = -6.0 dB, Cross Gain = -6.0 dB, High-Frequency Attenuation = -14.5 dB, High-Frequency Cutoff = 500 Hz. To restore the overall tonal balance and eliminate the "muffled" sound, apply the following High Shelf Filter under the "Advanced EQ Settings": Cutoff Frequency = 320 Hz, Q = 0.5, Gain = 6.0 dB. I use this with a Precut = -6.0 dB. Also set your base to 12db and cutoff base to 1 depending what headphones your using of course.  I did these settings before i return my x5ii 2nd generation compared 6 different audio files that were 48khz 16bit songs using my  Sennheiser hd650 and my beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80,  along with my Samsung dj studio stereo and they all sounding better with the iPod video. I don't know what to say maybe its just me but i  also had some friends listen to the player with out knowing witch player was  being used and out of 4 friends 3 chose the iPod.  Beleive me if it was not for the mod i did to it and rockbox the x5 would sounded better. Beleive me i love my fiio amps to death.  I dont go any where with out them lol.

I really love the idea of RockBox being ported to the X family but my only complaint/fear would be that the RockBox OS is usually much slower than the native one. I used to have RockBox on my iPod Classic (160GB version) and browsing from menu to menu was awfully slow compared to the native OS the iPod came with :/

Fiio firmware isn't fast either. I guess the development of fiio firmware will be fast if the source code is open just like android.

Well, I'm not sure how an iPod could sound better than a FiiO X5 II regardless of the OS since the sound is dependent on the hardware (DACs, filters, amps, power supplies, etc.).

I've only used the X5 II so I can't speak to FiiO's other models but I think the software team has done a fantastic job with the X5 II 1.27 beta firmware. It's simple to use and is lightning fast searching and playing my 20,000 FLAC/MP3 library. I'm not looking for my music player to do anything else besides play music since I already have an Android phone that can practically replace a PC.

I wouldn't be opposed to FiiO supporting Rockbox as long as it doesn't delay their core firmware projects. Keep up the good work guys.

I bought the X1 recently and quickly discovered that the firmware made the device all but unusable with a large audio library.

Like many others, I'm sure, I contacted FIIO "support" who were, as expected, unable or unwilling to address any of the issues.

Yesterday I asked them if they would at the very least port the device over to Rockbox and this was their response:

"Frankly speaking, some customers responsed this to us before. However, limited by the software system, it is hard for us to make some function like Rockbox. We tried, but failed.  Sorry for this inconvenience."

Welp, I guess I have as $200 paperweight.

Hello,

The way FiiO machines handle libraries (artists, music genres, playlists,...) is just insane to me.
I once had a 6GB Creative Labs Jukebox Zen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_NOMAD#NOMAD_Jukebox_Zen and I never have had such issues of freezes on very long libraries updates durations while this player was **by far** less powerful than the X5 II that I use for more than one year now.

And I am happy with the X5 II paired with two 128GB microSD cards (Samsung EVO+ and Sandisk); but this is true I do not need libraries as my music is well enough organized in directories and I prefer to have bigger "HD enough" Audio files (21bits (not 24bits, yes), 48khz in flac) than so many near-crap-quality up to 320kbs MP3 I will never be able to listen/manage anyway because they would be plethoric.

Maybe one should consider not to load 30000 mp3/aac songs and keep only the 2000 flac they really listen to; I think
But yes, FiiO should consider to remove or rewamp libraries indexing/handling as well sometime.

I'd like to see how a X5 II RockBoxed would work, though.

Enjoy your music

There's something I don't understand about the responses from Fiio....why do they keep talking about how "they" can't/won't do it, and how "it's not possible"? I don't suspect too many people are actually inferring that Fiio should be directly responsible for the Rockbox implementation; just that they need to make the device and its firmware accessible in an open way to third-party developers, the people who actually do the Rockbox ports.

If the following two things happened, we'd be much closer to knowing just how "not possible" this may or may not be:

1. Release the Fiio FW as open-source (I suspect this is the real reason that Fiio responds the way they do, in spite of the amazing goodwill it would earn from the community at large)

2. Release a detailed datasheet of the hardware (one for developers, not consumers)

Why, specifically, can the above two things not happen? "It is not possible" is not an acceptable answer for these as they require no actual "work", as 1) all software starts open-source (this is a nuanced statement, but most will understand my point), and 2) this datasheet obviously already exists internally.

OK...end of rant. For what it's worth, I love my X3II, and happily use it daily.

I agree with twiztedtbone - saying " it is hard for us to make some function like Rockbox" is bullshit.

What's needed are information about the hardware and how to enter the boot mode.
That shouldn't be a problem for FiiO - if they want it.

The rockbox port to X1 (1st gen) is currently ongoing - but as the software / boot system for the X1 2nd gen is totally different (and mostly unknown) no port can be started soon for the X1II.

As they should be linux based: how about GNU software?
I'm sure, they use some GNU based software - so they'd offer their source code for legal reasons, don't they?

I'm not very happy with my X1-II - everything is so slow and/or unusable (bluetooth)

BTW, if Fiio support does not know what we're talking about: ROCKbox - Open Source Jukebox Firmware

FiiO X1ii has linux OS on board so boot process is very similar to xDuoo X3:
(BootROM -> IPL -> SPL (u-boot) -> Kernel -> ramdisk).
The main task is to preserve the possibility of loading both the rockbox and the stock OS.
in X3 I've managed it with custom IPL.

I love Rockbox, I've used is back in 2003 on my Achros player, and recently on Sansa e260.
Yes, opening the platform's specs for Rockboxing is an amazing idea.
IMHO any company developing a software/os for their mysic devices should at least take a look at Rockbox to save itself time and trouble of reinventing a bicycle

xDuoo (Fiio's competitor) seems to be more progressive and has opened up their platform for Rockbox:
