Q: Five kinds of filter modes on X5 3rd gen

A: There are 5 kinds of Lowpass filter modes on the X5 3rd gen, and they are Shap Roll-Off Filter, Slow Roll-Off Filter, Short delay Sharp Roll-Off Filter, Short delay Slow Roll-Off Filter and Super Slow Roll-Off Filter. Please go access to "Settings-> Audio settings -> Lowpass filter mode", and then select the filter mode you want.

These 5 kinds of Lowpass filter modes are directly built in the DAC chip AK4490. Here is some official explanations about them from AKM company.  Of course, it is just for reference, after all, the sound quality is very subjective.
Welcome to share your experience about these different filter modes with us.

Thank you! Great help to understand the filters. I would suggest to integrate this chart in the manual.

A detailed description of the Five filter modes on X5 3rd gen.
Welcome to share your experience about these different filter modes.
Have fun

High Quality Sound Equal to The AK4490EQ with “VELVET SOUND” Technology.
The AK4490EN achieves -112 dB THD+N, the top level performance in the 120dB S/N class of DAC. This DAC reduces sound quality degradation caused by noise shapingrealizing a flat noise floor up to 200 kHz with AKM’s original switched capacitor filter and OSR Doubler technology. In addition, 32-bit processing andL/R symmetrical layout also optimized for sound quality.
Five different 32-bit digital filter types areavailable: Short delay sharp roll-off and short delay slow roll-off filters have overall short delay characteristics. Sharp roll-off filter and slow roll-off filter preserve the phase difference and a new filter that has even slower roll-off character was added to these four filters. They are selectable according to the user audio and system preferences.

Built-inDigital Filters

Thebuilt-in digital filters consist of 5 selectable filters. They include all the“popular” filters developed so far by different vendors plus one additional filter with undisclosed response (super slow roll-off). The filters are described as follows:

Linear phase Sharp Roll-off (AKMnotation: “no delay”): this is the “standard” sharp roll-off filter found isall DACs. It is also known as the “brickwall” filter. It is said thatpre-ringing sounds unnatural.

Linear phase Slow Roll-off (AKMnotation: “no delay”): this is also a “standard” filter found in all DACs. Asin the linear phase sharp roll-off filter, it also generates pre-ringing, buttrading lower amounts of pre-ringing with letting more aliased image through (theoretically increasing harmonic distortion).

Short delay Sharp Roll-off (AKM notation:“short delay”): this is also called the “minimum phase” or “apodizing” filterthat was the rage a few years back. Whereas in the past audio engineers have insisted in phase linearity (meaning all frequencies have equal phase ordelay), More recent research have shown that a “minimum phase” filter sacrifices some of the phase linearity (adds some phase distortion) for bettertime response. This filter removes all the “unnatural” pre-ringing but “dumps”all that energy to post-ringing. Implementation of this filter is also found inthe Wolfson WM8741/8742 DACs

Short delay Slow Roll-off (AKMnotation: “short delay”): this is a “more modern” type of filter also found inthe Wolfson WM8741/8742 DACs. In addition to eliminating pre-ringing, this filter also incorporates slow roll-off and this reduces post ringing as well.
The properties of this filter aresimilar to the "MP Filter" found in Ayres latest CD player.

Super Slow Roll-off: this filter is the differentiating feature (in terms of built-in filters) that this DAC provides. The AKM literature says “super slow roll-off filter with emphasized characteristics”(which really means nothing).
