I use FiiO X5 III with ear gear FiiO F5. The sound quality with the update 1.2.2 was really good; the voices and instruments were really separated. I was fully happy!
This week I updated to the newer version 1.2.3. The sound is now worse significantly, that I downgrade back to version 1.2.2.
To all: Recognice anybody else the same effect?
To FiiO: Whats the reason for that effect?

Hi MasterZ, after 1.2.3 updgrade I have used X5 for a couple of hours, but I noticed something similar. I was not sure, but it seemed to me that sound was 'closer' than before, and instruments not defined as I remembered. Now I read you have same sensation...
Tomorrow I'll hear some more and then I'll downgrade, for a better comparison.
Foe now, I re-up your questions:
To all: Recognice anybody else a sound deterioration by 1.2.3 fw?
To FiiO: What changes in sound shape by latest firmware?
Tahnks

Same for me,
After update my X5III to firmware 1.2.3, the sound is now like a Ipad!!!
Playing music thru DLNA is now impossible. I choose one music and it starts another one...
Hope they correct those bugs.

Downgrading is complicated to a dummy?

All the best!

Hi Anc69,
Absolutely right; same to me! With the firmware 1.2.3 the sound was really too close,
no more three-dimensionality. It was like a disorder in my head.
With the firmware 1.2.2 I'm happy again to listening music!

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. There is absolutely no difference between 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 sound quality. Of course, I run balanced IEM cables and the balanced amplifier output. If you are still using single-ended sound then I'm not sure how you can tell because any single-ended output sounds one dimensional after listening to balanced output.

As I mentioned in my previous post, there was no change in the staging between 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 and I'm super-sensitive to those types of changes. I'm using balanced output which has 10x more accurate staging than single-ended ended headphones so that would make it even more noticeable. Anyone who has MMCX IEM's can change to balanced sound for the price of a balanced replacement cable. Depending on the IEM's you have, they may even have come with both single-ended and balanced cables (most mid- to top-end IEM's come with both).

There is really only one thing that can change the sound-stage, depth of field and other ambient sound qualities on a digital audio system and that is the low-pass filters which are used to remove unwanted high frequencies out of the audio DACs prior to amplification. The X5III and X7II use different DAC's with 7 filter types on the X7II and 5 on the X5III but the principles are the same. Some filters create a wider, more open sound stage and some produce a closer sound stage as you have described. Take a look and see if the upgrade changed your filter settings - perhaps they use a default setting when upgrading. If so, changing to certain filters could cause the effect you are describing.

I'm using a Sony MDR X1000 since i bougt the X5III (with unbalanced cable), and i feel soud quality degraded since last firmware upgrade. I dont accept need to change to balanced cables because firmware bugs.
However, the DLNA bug (changing music i've chosed to ear) anyone have noticed that?

I think like Dilburt. I can not find any difference between the two versions of firmware 1.2.2 and 1.2.3, with balanced headphones the sound is just as good or as bad in both versions. I doubt enough that a change of firmware could affect the work of Fiio DACs.

Did you check to see if your lowpass filter settings changed when you upgraded? That could affect the sound as you describe.

Hey netorod,

You missed my point. I wasn't suggesting that you switch to balanced cables to compensate for bugs or whatever else may be causing the effect you mention. My point was that if you really care about getting the best possible sound and staging then you should be using balanced cables.

No matter what you do, you will never achieve the same level of staging, separation, noise floor and sound accuracy with single-ended cables. This is why microphones and audiophile-grade component systems have been using balanced cables for years. The X5-III contains a balanced amp which is unique in its price range. The X7 and X7-II have balanced amp modules. These amps are really two completely separate mono amps with plus and minus outputs rather than ground-relative mixed signals like single-ended stereo amps. The cables for balanced amps are always twisted because plus and minus outputs cancel all noise (theoretically) due to the +- field interactions at each twist. In addition, due to the absolute separation of left and right channels, the staging and separation of sound are jaw-dropping.

Hi dilburt!

Thanks for information.
I know the concept. I'm a synthetyser nerd with an extense home studio for several years .
As i saed, i'm using the same set (Sony MDR MX 1000), and it seems the sound is now worst with same configuration.

All the best!

Hi dilburt,

As netorod explained, I used also the same set by testing both firmware 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 (FiiO X5 III, Balanced cable from FiiO, in ear buds FiiO FH 5). I am absolutely sure, the sound with firmware 1.2.3 is worst significantly as with the firmware 1.2.2. The same effect I am getting with the docking station FiiO K5.

Same here. Everything was messed up. Even the 1.2.2 went bad when using as a DAC. I went ahead ahead and reverted to 1.2.1 using the simple instructions here: https://www.fiio.com/newsinfo/69471.html

The only thing I can think is that these reported sound differences are caused by a bad install. I've had all these versions installed and there is no sound difference between 1.2.2/1.0.8 and 1.2.3/1.0.9. However, I do notice a sound difference between 1.2.1/3.4.3 and 1.2.2/1.0.8 because the sound noticeably improved with the new app architecture.

FiiO has stated there were no changes in the code related to sound between 1.2.2/1.0.8 and 1.2.3/1.0.9 so you should try a clean reinstall of the new version (1.2.3/1.0.9) rather than going back to an old version. I know this isn't what you want to hear but you will resolve your problem much faster this way than waiting for a fix when FiiO says there weren't any changes to fix.
