M11 Pro Tidal MQA

Dear FiiO friends,

I just bought M11 Pro and it appears that despite all promises with the new firmware, which I patiently waited before getting the device, THERE IS NO MQA unfold of Tidal tracks!!!! Only 2x unfold which is done by any Android device!!! When are we getting Tidal MQA support with unfold of up to 8x according the promises for the last 6 months????

Another question to the users here - what is UAPP player? I can't even find it in the Google Store. Thank you!

I have the same... It means that that is only 2x unfold... As I understand the app lets the device do the unfolds, and it seems that fiio does only 2x, not 8x as advertised... damn it

M11 MQA playback already supported by the TIDAL v2.32.1

I have updated to Tidal v2.32.1 - I do not seem to have any ability to send the Master file through to the M11 Pro DAC to make the final unfold. Tidal Masters come through as either 88.2k or 96k according to the 'sample rate display' in the M11 Pro Status Bar.

Does Tidal actually have any Masters that should unfold to 192k 24bit or 384k?

Am I getting this completely wrong and my M11 Pro and Tidal are actually working as intended?

If I run an MQA file through the FiiO Music player the status bar displays 352.8k and has an 'MQA' icon next to it.

Whatever is happening is very confusing. I would just love a decent explanation of if this is a common confusion or if Tidal are actually adding a fix in.

For example, on Desktop app there is a 'MQA passthrough' option which would probably solve this problem on Android 7, its just that Android 7 app doesn't have that option at all.

try this one for example, I get the mqa icon on the status bar, and full mqa unfold with the v2.32.1

@mzperx Lifesaver! - yes thankyou that file works!

For the interests of posterity I will log my process of getting here for any noobs like me, buzzwords for search engine include FiiO M11 Pro, MQA Passthrough, Master, Tidal, Full unfold, kHz.

1. Get FiiO M11 Pro

2. Install latest firmware, up to at least 1.0.3

3. Install Tidal via google play store or applications. Update Tidal to at least v2.32.1 (you may need to reset device to see another update on play store).

4. Ensure you have a Tidal Premium account to get Master files.

5. Turn on ‘Sample rate display’ in Display settings of M11 Pro.

6. Know that not all Tidal Masters will have an ‘MQA authentication’ icon in the M11 Pro status bar when playing.



So I guess the only thing left that is confusing, and would be great to have an audiophile explanation if possible -


How come many tracks on Tidal are labelled as ‘Master’ but only run as 88.2k or 96k and do not have an MQA authentication icon in the status bar. Also how come some masters display as 44.1k and DO have an MQA icon next to it in the status bar?



Examples: -
a) “Sign O’ The Times (Super Deluxe)”, Prince > 44.1k and DOES have MQA icon.


b) “My Way, Soon” Greta Van Fleet > 88.2k without MQA icon.


c) “Beautiful Drug” Bon Jovi > 96k without MQA icon


d) “California” Tom Petty > 96k and DOES have MQA icon.


e) (Album) “The Nordic Sound” 2L Audiophile reference > 352.8k and DOES have MQA icon.


f) “Mambo Sun” Pixes > 88.2k without MQA icon.



As you can see I could go on… it’s kind of confusing and i’m sure there is a good explanation as to why some masters do not have an MQA icon, and some do…?? Sorry if a noob audio question, been trying to research it honest!



-----UPDATE---- I've also just seen something wierd, I think a bug... in the 'Rock - Tidal Masters' playlist, if I directly select to play the file "My Way, Soon" by Greta Van Fleet the M11 Pro status bar displays '88.2k' with no MQA icon. HOWEVER if I let the previous track play first which is "California" by Tom petty and let it automatically change to "My Way, Soon" It runs at 44.1k and DOES have the MQA icon!!! THEN pausing and unpausing the track changes it to 88.2K again and sounds worse!!

@FiiO Any ideas?

the mqa indicator is visible for all of your master example track on my device
perhaps you should clear the Tidal cache, check the stream and download quality settings and set to master, delete and re-download the content what you want offline, if there is any

by the way it seems the Tidal app make the first unfold, and the M11 handle the rendering stage for the mqa streams

mqa related sample rates are a little bit confusing, there are some
1; original sample rate of the master data (studio), 44.1 - 384k
2; sample rate of the container (flac), 44.1 or 48k
3; sample rate after the first unfold, 88.2 or 96k
4; sample rate of the playback, depends on the DAC and the implementation, 352.8 or 384k in the case of the M11
5; sample rate indicated by the mqa capable DAC, original sample rate (1;) or lower if the DAC's maximum is lower, 44.1 - 384k

To unfold all mentioned and many other tracks you need to do following steps:
1. Erase all Tidal app cache;
2. Erase all Tidal app data;
3. Uninstall Tidal app;
4. Install brand new Tidal 2.32.1 (1012);
AND THE MAIN STEP (WITHOUT IT YOU WON'T GET THING RIGHT):
5. Disable "Loudness normalization" in Tadal app
and BINGO!

omg...... yeah turning off 'loudness equalisation' fixed the weird bug I was getting where the MQA was not unfolding properly if I directly selected some tracks.... lol. Thats really very annoying! But thankyou for the tip.

I have a weird problem with my FiiO M11 (latest firmware 1.1.0) and the latest Tidal app (2.35.0.1019.756). Using my Meier Audio Corda Soul (DAC/Headphone amp - 4000 Dollar combo) sound would play normally connected via SPDIF with Hifi, but there would be no sound with Master quality tracks.
Using my HiBy R6 Pro, no problem.
Using USB of my Samsung telephone with the USB Audio Player PRO, no problem.
Tried different settings in the FiiO and also disabled the Tidal “Loudness equalisation”.
Any ideas what I could do?
